  1. 1860-1904. Russian dramatist and writer. He
  2. began to write short stories and comic
  3. sketches as a medical student. His plays
  4. concentrate on the creation of atmosphere and
  5. delineation of internal development, rather
  6. than external action. His first play Ivanov
  7. 1887 was a failure, as was The Seagull 1896
  8. until revived by Stanislavsky 1898 at the
  9. Moscow Art Theatre, for which Chekhov went on
  10. to write his major plays: Uncle Vanya 1899,
  11. The Three Sisters 1901 and The Cherry Orchard
  12. 1904. Born at Taganrog, he qualified as a
  13. doctor 1884, but devoted himself to writing
  14. short stories rather than practicing
  15. medicine. The collection Particoloured
  16. Stories 1886 consolidated his reputation and
  17. gave him leisure to develop his style, as
  18. seen in My Life 1895, The Lady with the Dog
  19. 1898 and In the Ravine 1900.
